When the term “open access” was first coined more than 20 years ago, the focus of the OA movement was on how to share research – the best tactics to distribute peer-reviewed articles on the Internet. Two decades on, the scope and purpose of open access has broadened and shifted. OA is no longer “an end in itself, but a means to the equity, quality, usability, and sustainability of research,” writes the group that initially defined it. 

But what do we mean when we talk about equity of research and scholarship? 

This talk will explore the ways in which researchers, librarians, funders, institutions, among others – like UNESCO – are working to make scholarship and access to it more equitable as well as more open. We’ll look at work by people at MIT and a consortium of US institutions, as well as international programs, platforms, & tools.
